EDMONTON
When people think of shopping in Albertaeven CanadaWest Edmonton Mall comes immediately to mind. Located in the provincial capital, the supermall spans an area of over 48 city blocks and houses more than 800 stores and 100 restaurants. And that’s not all. A visitor’s shopping experience can be complemented by a trip to one of the mall’s many notable attractions, which include a water park, theme park and indoor lake, to name a few.
Those that prefer a more laid-back shopping experience needn’t look far. Old Strathcona’s Whyte Avenue (82nd Avenue), located near the University of Alberta campus, is the local favourite for an outdoor shopping experience. This retail district covers a stretch of 7.2 km (4.5 mi) with trendy, independent boutiques, eclectic local pubs and a few favourite chain shops. Everything from the latest trends to the oldest antiques can be picked up along this shopping gem.
Hockey, football, campus liferival cities Calgary and Edmonton compete in a number of different ways, and shopping is no exception. Cross Iron Mills, located just north of Calgary, is a fierce competitor of West Edmonton Mall. The single-level megamall houses over 200 retailers, restaurants and entertainment centres, about half of which are discount outlet locations. For both an efficient and visually interesting shopping experience, stores are grouped into neighbourhoods: fashion, ranching, resources, fossils, and sports and entertainment. There are a number of other malls located within Calgary worth mentioning, including Chinook Centre and Market Mall.
